US Senator Richard Lugar Visits the STCU

On Tuesday, August 31, 2004, the STCU proudly hosted the first visit to the Center by United States Senator Richard Lugar. Senator Lugar, along with former Senator Sam Nunn, was the co-author of the Nunn-Lugar Act which was the driving force behind the U.S. participation in the creation of the STCU. Senator Lugar is the current Chairman of the U.S. Senate Foreign Relations Committee which oversees all U.S. foreign relations and policies.
Accompanying the Senator was U.S. Ambassador to Ukraine John Herbst, along with James Reid and Andrew Weber, Director and Adviser, respectively, of the Cooperative Threat Reduction Policy, Office of the Secretary of Defense (OSD).
STCU Executive Director Andrew Hood provided these esteemed guests with a presentation on the STCU and its cooperative work with the former weapons scientists of Azerbaijan, Georgia, Ukraine and Uzbekistan in combating the proliferation of weapons of mass destruction. Mr. Hood then hosted a tour of the Center’s premises.
Senator Lugar expressed his great appreciation and strong support for the accomplishments of the Center as well as his “deep admiration for the work of the STCU”.
Following his visit to the Center, the Senator visited the Central Sanitary Epidemiological Station in Kyiv. This important visit was arranged by the STCU with the Ministry of Health of Ukraine.
