STCU Participates in First Annual “CNCP - Kazakhstan, Ukraine, Uzbekistan” Conference

From March 15 -17, 2005, the First Annual “CNCP - Kazakhstan, Ukraine, Uzbekistan” Conference was held at the Institute of Nuclear Physics in Almaty, Kazakhstan.
The Close Nuclear Centres Programme (CNCP) of the U.K. Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) aims to limit the spread of weapons of mass destruction by promoting sustainable civil sector employment for former nuclear weapons scientists in the countries of the CIS. The Programme became an STCU partner in August 2004.
Representatives of CNCP DTI, ISTC, and the STCU shared their experiences in nonproliferation and sustainability development. The STCU was represented by Governmental Partnerships Manager, Dr. Lyubov Taranenko, who presented a paper on the experiences of the STCU in Ukraine and Uzbekistan. Delegations from the Kharkiv Institute of Physics and Technology, Ukraine; Institute of Nuclear Physics, Uzbekistan; and Institute of Nuclear Physics, Kazakhstan; each presented three technologies, which are being investigated with CNCP support in order to establish their commercial realization by carrying out market research and business planning. International experts from CNCP moderated the panel discussions on markets under research, training issues, diversification and support to local economic and business development. The experience of Russian institutions' of participation in CNCP was also showcased.
