The 24th STCU Governing Board meeting convened on 31 May 2007 in Chisinau, Moldova

The 24th STCU Governing Board meeting convened on 31 May 2007 in Chisinau, Moldova; the first time the STCU Governors have met in Moldova. The Governing Board approved over $7.1 million and ˆ2.5 million in new and extended research projects. This funding is the second highest total (in US dollar equivalent) ever approved at an STCU Governing Board meeting and continues the rising trend of STCU project activity that began last year.
Among these new projects are 7 STCU-Georgian National Science Foundation Targeted Initiative projects (totaling $114,913 and ˆ42,538) and 10 STCU-National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine Targeted Initiative projects (totaling $244,976 and ˆ181,409). The Targeted R&D Initiative Program began in 2005, with the goal of co-financing, as equal partners, jointly selected projects that combine STCU nonproliferation goals with recipient country S&T priorities. This was the inaugural cycle of the STCU- Georgian National Science Foundation program and the 3rd cycle of the STCU- National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine program. In early May, the first-ever Targeted Initiative program with the National Academy of Sciences of Azerbaijan was started, and other Targeted Initiatives are being negotiated with interested governmental agencies in Moldova and other STCU members.
The 24th Governing Board also approved 3 new projects involving Moldova scientists, bringing the number of STCU-Moldova science projects to 5, totaling $65,956 and ˆ603,685. The Republic of Moldova is the newest recipient member of the STCU, acceding to the STCU Agreement in December 2004 and establishing full STCU operations with opening of the STCU Information Office in Chisinau in October 2006.
