Regional Seminars "Awareness raising and education on Biosafety and Biosecurity in Ukraine"

5th and 6th Regional Seminars "Awareness raising and education on Biosafety and Biosecurity in Ukraine" in the framework of the STCU project P633 funded by the Ministry of Defense of the United Kingdom were successfully held on 14-15 April in Kharkiv and 17-20 of May, 2016 in Kyiv, Ukraine, correspondingly.
The Kharkiv Seminar joined about 50 participants: the Life Sciences specialists, lecturers, postgraduates and students (master and bachelor levels) from the advanced Universities and research Institutions of Kharkiv region, including Kharkiv National Medical University, National University of Pharmacy, Karazin National University of Kharkiv, Kharkiv Medical Academy of Postgraduate Education, NSC “Institute of Experimental and Clinical Veterinary Medicine”, Kharkiv State Veterinary Academy, National Technical University "Kharkiv Polytechnic Institute", etc. The programme of the Seminar consisted of the following education modules presented by Dr. Galyna Gergalova and Dr. Yaroslava Maksymovich: Module I "Biosafety and Biosecurity in Ukraine. Issues and problems "; Module II "Bioethics in Ukraine. Problems and objectives", Module III "Interactive training of adults. Biorisk management". There were also organized the Round table discussions for the University lecturers "Teaching Biosafety, Biosecurity, Bioethics in Ukraine" and " Educational resources and training materials. Bradford series" with the purpose to discuss the problems in teaching these courses for the Life Sciences students in Ukraine and share the best foreign experience in education on Biosafety and Biosecurity among the Ukrainian specialists.
The seminar in Kiev united 27 delegates of the advanced Institutions from different parts of Ukraine and abroad: Palladin Institute of Biochemistry NAS of Ukraine(Kyiv), University of Bradford (UK), Taras Shevchenko National University of Kyiv, Kharkiv National Medical University, Oles Gonchar National University of Dnipropetrovsk, Dnipropetrovsk Medical Academy, National Academy of Security Service of Ukraine (Kyiv), Vinnitsa National Pirogov Memorial Medical University, Bogomolets National Medical University (Kyiv), Ivan Franko National University of Lviv, Mechnikov National University of Odesa, Poltava State Agrarian Academy, Sumy State University, I.Ya. Horbachevsky Ternopil State Medical University, Bohdan Khmelnytsky Cherkasy National University, Fedkovich Chernivtsi National University, etc. The new books «Preventing Biological Threats: What You Can Do» та «Biological Security Education Handbook: The Power of Team-Based Learning» published at Bradford University (UK) were presented by Dr. Tatyana Novossiolova, the P633 project Collaborator from the Bradford University. The STCU Senior Bio-Specialist Dr. Vlada Pashynska reported to the Seminars participants about the recent “STCU Initiatives in Biosafety and Biosecurity”.
The educational materials in Biosafety and Biosecurity developed in the P633 STCU project were also presented and distributed by Dr. Galyna Gergalova and Dr. Vlada Pashynska at the International conference “Problems of emergent animal diseases: molecular epizootology, express-diagnosis and biosafety”, 6-10 June, Odessa.
