Joint Statement
The Governing Board of the Science and Technology Center in Ukraine (STCU) held its tenth meeting on June 1, 2000. The STCU supports peaceful scientific research and development projects that provide opportunities for professional redirection of scientists and engineers from former Soviet weapons of mass destruction programs. At this session, the Governing Board approved USD $6,215,108 plus 683,000 Euros in new STCU projects to be funded by Canada, the European Union, and the United States. The projects will be carried out in Ukraine and in the republic of Uzbekistan.
400 scientists, the majority of whom have special weapons expertise will participate in the project activities. The projects cover the technical areas of health care, energy technologies, environmental advancements and materials sciences. They will be carried out in a number of cities across Ukraine, including Kyiv, Kharkiv, Dniepropetrovsk, Lviv, Odessa, Pavlograd, Donetsk, and in Tashkent, Uzbekistan. In addition to projects funded by the STCU Parties, the Board approved 12 new projects valued at USD $451,000 that are fully funded by STCU Partner organizations. The Board also acknowledged the following organizations as new STCU Partners: Paradigm Shift Technologies. (Canada); J.J. MacKay Canada Ltd. (Canada); Plasmatec Inc. (Canada); Upsalla University (Sweden,EU); and Aero-Sensing Radarsysteme GmbH (Germany, EU).
In addition to project funding, the Board received updates on other STCU activities such as travel grants; seminar and patent support programs; training in intellectual property rights protection; commercialization and business management topics; management of project results and continuing development of the STCU web site (www.stcu.int). The Governing Board acknowledged the completion of the first and most important phase of the "Program Supporting Y2K Readiness at Ukrainian Nuclear Power Plants," averting critical rollover date problems in Ukrainian NPPs. The second phase of the program, to be financed by the European Union, will contribute to overall nuclear safety in Ukraine. Members of the Governing Board delegations also visited the Institute of Semiconductor Physics where they learned about the results of STCU funded projects and planned future activities.
