Board 59, 9th October 2024, Brussels, Belgium

The Fifty-Ninth (59th) Meeting of the Governing Board of the Science and Technology Center in Ukraine (STCU) convened on 9 October 2024 in a hybrid format, with participants gathering both in Brussels, Belgium, and virtually. The Governing Board representatives from the European Union, Ukraine, and the United States of America, were joined by the STCU executive management team, and by representatives from the Moldovan National Agency for Research and Development, the Ministry of Education and Science of Ukraine, as well as the Georgian Shota Rustaveli National Science Foundation.

At this 59th meeting, the Governing Board approved twelve (12) new government funded projects for a total of $942,049 and ˆ14,000,000. The Governing Board also confirmed seven (7) new Partner Projects valued at $1,342,492 and ˆ1,301,544 and confirmed eleven (11) Partner Project contract extensions valued at $1,382,780 and ˆ54,000. In total, funding at the 59th meeting equals approximately $20.7M, representing the third largest Governing Board in STCU’s history, eclipsed only by the funding amounts at the two previous Governing Boards (GB 58 and GB 57).

The 59th Governing Board funding amounts are significant and represent two separate milestones at the STCU. First, when coupled with the funding approved at the 58th STCU Governing Board ($33.2M in funding) conducted this past May, funding equals $53.9M in total which represents the highest year in funding in STCU history and eclipses the last year’s previous record of $34.1M. Second, the 59th STCU Governing Board funding brings STCU’s cumulative funding over the 29 years of its activities to over $450M. These amounts show the steadfast commitment of the EU and the United States, and all the STCU’s Parties and Partners to Ukraine whilst it continues its fight to defeat the invading forces of the Russian Federation.

The Governing Board approved the 2025 Administrative Operating Budget and Supplemental Budget requests from the STCU Secretariat, as well as the 2023 Annual Report as presented.

About STCU: The STCU is an intergovernmental organization established by the Parties to advance global peace through cooperative Chemical, Biological, Radiological, and Nuclear (CBRN) risk mitigation. The STCU fosters civilian science partnerships addressing global security threats and advancing non-proliferation. With a 29-year legacy, the STCU has allocated over $450 million to nearly 2,300 R&D projects spanning diverse sectors. The STCU Governing Board includes representatives from Azerbaijan, the European Union, Georgia, Moldova, Ukraine, and the United States. The STCU Governing Board assembles semi-annually and oversees the Center's policy and funding determinations, while its Secretariat in Kyiv, Ukraine, implements its resolutions.
